Welcome to the Ringgold Customer Bulletin, and we hope that you like our newly updated logo! We are gearing up for the Frankfurt Book Fair where we will be meeting with many of our customers and prospective customers (stand L71, Hall 4.2).
The scholarly communications arena is constantly evolving, and we have been discussing with our clients the implications for their businesses of the recently announced ‘Plan S’. Whatever your business model, Ringgold can help you to organize and enhance your data for analysis of subscription, Gold APC, and other open access models to assess potential changes. Ringgold’s curated data has never been more important, and we have recently upgraded our in-house systems to make them even more responsive to the constantly changing world of organizations. As part of that effort we have also upgraded our Validate interface for customers.
We are currently working with customers to structure and enrich their affiliation data to make submission and APC workflows more efficient, and to help build a better organizational picture of authors and customers for reporting and analysis. If you would like to learn more then please get in touch or arrange a meeting in Frankfurt.
Jay Henry, Chief Marketing Officer.

Keeping Identify up-to-date
Ringgold has recently upgraded its in-house system, Identify Production. This has been developed over a number of years to allow our researchers to interact with, and maintain, Identify and it forms part of our ongoing work to ensure our data remains as accurate as possible.
As part of our ongoing database work we have updated 71,643 records so far this year. This has included detailed reviews of the following hierarchies:
- Ringgold ID 49562 Uniwersytet im Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
- Ringgold ID 37631 Sveučilište u Zagrebu
- Ringgold ID 9184 Technische Universität München
- Ringgold ID 6684 Oregon Health & Science University – the review included an update of the name from “Oregon Health and Science University” to “Oregon Health & Science University”.
- Ringgold ID 15626 Kaplan University – the former for-profit university has been acquired by Purdue University and rebranded as Purdue University Global. It is now a public non-profit university. We have updated Purdue University Global and its 14 campus records to reflect the changes.
- Ringgold ID 113103 Gouvernement du Québec – review of the regional government hierarchy, in particular addition of translations.
- Ringgold ID 55293 Aveva SA changed its name to Orano after selling its nuclear reactor division. Framatome SA (formerly known as Aveva NP) to EDF. We updated the corporate hierarchies of IDs 55293 and 57492 (Framatome SA) to reflect the changes
Change to Editorial Policy
We have made a slight change to the policy for Organization Name. To clarify, we will change the symbol ‘&’ to ‘and’ unless it is part of the legal name, e.g. ‘Texas A&M University’. All other punctuation is removed except the apostrophe ‘ (which replaces “), and a dash, which is used for campus records (e.g., Ohio University – Lancaster Campus). Further, no diacritics are used in the Organization Name, but are included in Alternate Name. All abbreviations are spelled out, except Co, Inc, GmbH, Ltd, LLC etc, unless part of the legal name, e.g. Company, Limited, St, etc. Definite and indefinite articles are removed from the beginning of names, such as ‘The’, ‘A’, ‘An’, ‘Der’, Le’ except where part of the legal name, e.g. ‘The Open University’.
For complete details, see the full Editorial Policy.
Consortium Directory Online update
There are now 499 records in the Consortium Directory with one new entry:
- Ringgold ID 521357, Biblioteca Virtuale per la Salute-Piemonte (Italy)
We are continuously reviewing the existing records in CDO to ensure that our data is up to date. More information about CDO can be found on our website.
