Emerald Group Publishing was the main publishing partner of the world's first global, purely virtual climate conference, Climate 2008 - Klima 2008. The event took place online from 3 - 7 November 2008. Registration was free, allowing participants to interact, access, comment on and discuss a wide range of scientific papers focusing on climate change from environmental, social, economic and policy aspects.
The online event was organised by the Faculty of Life Sciences of the Hamburg University of Applied Sciences in Hamburg, Germany and chaired by Professor Walter Leal, Editor of the International Journal of Climate Change Strategies and Management which Emerald will be launching in early 2009.
In collaboration with Emerald, a Best Paper Award was selected by the organisers and the scientific committee, taking into account the votes of users, from among the scientific papers submitted. The award went to two contributions in category 1 - "papers on scientific aspects of climate change including on modelling, forecasts and data analysis, generated by interdisciplinary teams" - Kenza Khomsi and Sanae Akrari, Direction de la Météorologie Nationale, Morocco, for their paper on Climate change simulation by Arpege-Climate model, and Christina Rullán Lemke and Britta Stein, Technical University of Hamburg-Harburg, Germany, for their paper on Population - Climate - Energy: Scenarios to 2050.
John Peters, Chief Executive of Emerald, said, "We are delighted to support this innovative event. Climate change is a matter of concern to us all and by awarding a Best Paper Award we hope to motivate more scientific works in this field and encourage more scientists and doctoral students to publish the results of their research."
Other partners to the conference include the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), and the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). UNESCO stated the event was a project of the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005 to 2014).
The next conference, Climate 2009 - Klima 2009, will be held from 2-6 Nov 2009.
