Additional music resources available on EBSCOhost

mail article to a friend
Music researchers now have additional resources available to them on EBSCOhost. EBSCO has released the RISM Series A/II: Music Manuscripts after 1600 (RISM) and the Index to Printed Music, (IPM). RISM, which indexes musical sources, is a resource for music researchers and historians while IPM offers researchers and students access to individual pieces of printed music that are provided within scholarly literature.

RISM Series A/II: Music Manuscripts after 1600

RISM Series A/II: Music Manuscripts after 1600 contains bibliographic records of music manuscripts written after 1600 and up to 1800. The records include information in standard bibliographic categories as well as graphical images of over 780,000 music incipits, which can be viewed as musical scores. The goal of the database is to document the world's musical sources of manuscripts or printed music, works on music theory, and libretti stored in libraries, archives, monasteries, schools and private collections.

RISM references manuscripts which are located in more than 750 libraries and archives in 31 countries. The database contains more than 585,000 records covering over 20,000 composers. RISM is put together by the International Inventory of Musical Sources - an international, non-profit joint venture based in Germany that documents what materials exist and where they are stored. At least 20,000 new records are added each year.

Index to Printed Music

Index to Printed Music is the only electronic database designed to find individual pieces of music printed in standard scholarly editions. The database contains more than 300,000 records with detailed indexing including but not limited to: composers, poets, librettists, performing forces (medium), formats, genres, etc. A separate collection authority link makes it possible to search for titles of music collections, as well as individual compositions.

IPM is compiled by the James Adrian Music Company, a not-for-profit organisation, and has received support from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the Andrew W Mellon Foundation.

EBSCOhost music databases

RISM and IPM join a collection of databases for music research available on EBSCOhost. The Music Index Online provides a subject-author guide to music periodical literature while RILM Abstracts of Music Literature and RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals combine to cover music periodicals from 1800-present. Additional music coverage is also available in International Bibliography of Theatre & Dance and International Bibliography of Theatre & Dance with Full Text.
