Automated support for Athens Authentication (from Eduserv) has been added to WebFeat Express. Athens joins other remote user authentication schemes already supported with WebFeat Express, including: all major ILS system RPAs, EZ Proxy, Shibboleth, username/password, IP range and referring URL.
WebFeat's implementation of Athens enables single sign-on for all resources, regardless of whether the native resource supports Athens authentication. Libraries may use Athens for remote user authentication, and mix a variety of authentication methods in tandem to authenticate commercial databases. These include IP, Shibboleth, username/password, and hybrids. Once logged in via Athens, the user is never prompted again for authentication, regardless of the authentication method used by the commercial vendor. The optional WebFeat Proxy enables single sign-on for native search interfaces as well as federated search, offering a one-stop authentication capability using Athens for all search situations.
Athens is currrently a standard for secure access management to web-based services for the UK education and health sectors. Bournemouth University is WebFeat's first UK customer to implement a WebFeat Express system with Athens Authentication. Their WebFeat system includes access to nearly 90 electronic resources, any or all of which can be simultaneously searched from a single, interface customised for the library. WebFeat can be accessed from within the library or remotely via Athens.
