IFLA opportunities

IFLA is in Glasgow from 18-21st August. There are numerous meetings and events plus a large exhibition with over 130 exhibitors. An ideal time to see the technical solutions to your e-problems and to meet many of the key suppliers in one “hit”. Amongst many events there are receptions and workshops from OCLC, divine and JSTOR.

AAAS report on scientists' authorship rights

This is an important report from the AAAS into the continuing uncertainty and change that besets scholarly publishing at the moment. A key recommendation is that “...evolutionary changes in the patterns of current licensing practices for electronic publishing are required...”. Acknowledging that this will take time the report urges scientists and publishers to take a lead role in building a new publishing system embodying the set of core values that the report identifies.

EBSCO release TOC Premier

EBSCO have released their latest research tool – TOC Premier™. This service is an enhanced version of Current Citations – expanded to include 23,000 titles. There are several new linking options provided – to the EBSCO full text, via CrossRef to library e-journals and also to the library OPAC. An ILL link is also available as are OpenURL and Google links.

APS pricing explained

APS have released an interesting analysis of their pricing for 2003 as an open letter to the library community on their web site As well as providing the actual prices increases for next year, APS have made a significant contribution to the debate about publishing profits and subscription price hikes by publishing basic costs on their operation and the philosophy behind their pricing model. Boulderstone is new Director of e-Strategy at BL

Richard Boulderstone has been appointed Director of e-Strategy at the British Library. His appointment comes 6 months after Herbert Van de Sompel departed after just a few months in the post to a more pure research oriented position in the US.

COUNTER survey closes

The COUNTER survey has had an excellent response from librarians. About 500 forms have been completed in phase 1 of this project to establish a statistical code of practice for online usage statistics.

2003 Journal Price announcements

Arnold and OUP have announced their 2003 prices. Both companies have also announced their membership of the HINARI scheme which allows institutions in the developing world to have subscriptions for free or much reduced rates.

EBSCOhost® Web 6.0 released

Two new databases for the pharmaceutical and nutrition industries have been launched/announced by FIZ Karlsruhe. PHARMAML and NUTRACEUT. Both databases provide industry news and developments, events and product news. Updated weekly, the database service extends back to 1992.

Blackwell introduce unified pricing

A new, unified pricing structure for 2003 has been announced by Blackwells. The pricing applies to the majority of journal titles. This new price structure applies to former Blackwell Publishers, Blackwell Science, Blackwell Wissenschafts-Verlag, Munksgaard and Futura journals.

PubSCIENCE to cease

The US governments PubSCIENCE – a web based index service for Department of Energy supported research – is to cease publication. Most of the work is now covered by free commercial services. The DOE is looking for comment before September 8th before finalising the decision.
